So, you’ve decided to make a garden
Having a garden designed and built is a big decision. What do you do now? Research the cost of making a gardens is a good place to start (You can do that here) to get a realistic idea of what is possible for your situation. Not everyone can afford to have someone design and build a garden and might need to complete the construction in parts with some help or by themselves. Some people put a high importance on their outdoor spaces and decide and are willing to invest in their space to make something special to enjoy.
At this point it is a good idea to start looking around for garden designers and styles that you like through magazines, books, the internet etc. You might find a designer who’s style fits your project or a site driven designer that will be flexible enough to create a great space for you (you can find more information about this here).
Once you have a shortlist of designers that you like it is a good idea to do some homework on the designer. Are they a design and build or design only business? Do they project manage? How long does their process usually take? Are they booked out? Do they service your area? How much experience do they have? What are their reviews like? Do they have references? What do their gardens looks like 5 years later? Do you get along with them? Will the designer actually work on your project or someone else in the office?
Once you have done your homework and decided on a designer it is time to enjoy the process and hopefully get a landscape that you will enjoy for years to come.
